Butt hinges is one of the first type of hinges that were developed for swing doors and has been considered the defacto swing hardware for many years. A typical butt hinge is comprised of
three pieces, first is the hinge pin, second is a left flap with a hinge joint that attaches to the frame, thrid is the a right flap with a hinge joint that attaches to the door.
You can find butt hinges installed on cabinets, fence gates, steel gates, commercial doors "heavy duty hinges", residential doors, and many other building materials and house hold items.
Butt Hinges & Storefront Doors
Butt hinges have been the defacto hinge to be installed on aluminum storefront doors for many years. Butt hinges have two flaps one that screws onto the aluminum storefront door frame and one that screws onto the aluminum storefront door, with 3-4 screw holes on each flap.
Typical sizes for butt hinges are 4 1/2" high and 1 1/2" for each flaps depth.
